In the first half of 2019, the industry association for producers of plastic roofing and waterproofing membranes reported sales of over 9 million square metres. These plastic roofing membranes have a long service life, but at some point this is also over and they are fed into the circular economy, i.e. recycling, in the interests of sustainability. The Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) is planning to increase the recycling of products. The manufacturers of roofing and waterproofing membranes have already been making a voluntary commitment for years with the aim of recycling all available old plastic roofing membranes at the end of their useful life.

And this is exactly where the processing plants from TRENNSO-TECHNIK® come into play. TRENNSO-TECHNIK® has stood for expertise in dry separation processes and plants for the separation of dry bulk materials in the recycling and food sector for decades. In July 2020, we installed a system for recycling old plastic roofing membranes and production surpluses for a customer in Germany.
The turnkey system consisting of separation and sorting units processes the shredded and ground waste webs. The end result is a high-quality raw material for recycling.
Modules from TRENNSO-TECHNIK® in use
The modules used by TRENNSO-TECHNIK® for this system included:
ZZS air separator for separating products by weight, shape and size
Sifting machine SIK for sifting granular products
Cell wheel rotary valves for discharging and dosing with constant throughput
Cyclones for separating fine-grained and fibrous products
Elevators for vertical conveying
Trough screws for inclined transport
In addition, we designed, built and assembled all the corresponding steel structures and the required control system. The hourly throughput of this plant is 500 kg. The recovered plastics are filled into BigBags and can be used, for example, as floor protection mats in greenhouse construction or for riding arenas and paddock fastenings.
